How Do I Clean and Maintain Shutter Blinds?

Shutter blinds are stylish, functional and are a great choice of blind for your home. However to keep them looking their best and maintain longevity, they require proper care and maintenance. Regular cleaning and maintenance can help preserve their appearance, functionality, and overall lifespan. But who do you clean and maintain them? Continue reading and we will tell you!

1. Dusting

Dusting your shutter blinds regularly is essential to prevent the buildup of dirt and dust particles. To dust your shutter blinds, use a clean, dry cloth or a feather duster to gently remove the surface dust. Starting from the top, work your way down and make sure that you cover and wipe each slat thoroughly. Make sure that you dust both sides of the blinds!

2. Vacuuming

Vacuums are a great way to achieve a more thorough clean of your shutter blinds. The vacuum is able to remove finer dust particles that might be more difficult to reach with a cloth or duster. To use a vacuum to clean your shutter blinds, use the brush attachment and run the brush along the slats, starting from the top and moving down to the bottom. Make sure that you set your vacuum to the lowest suction setting to avoid damaging the slats.

3. Spot Cleaning

If you notice any stains or stubborn marks on your shutter blinds, spot cleaning is the way to go. Make a mild solution of warm water and gentle liquid detergent or mild soap. Dampen a soft cloth or sponge in the solution, wring out any excess water, and gently wipe the affected area. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners as they can damage the finish of the blinds. After spot cleaning, wipe the area with a clean, damp cloth to remove any residue and then dry it thoroughly.

4. Deep Cleaning

From time to time, it is a good idea to give your shutter blinds a deep cleaning to remove any accumulated grime and grease. To deep clean your shutter blinds, firstly remove them from their hinges or tracks, if possible and lay them flat on a clean, soft surface. Using either warm water mixed with a mild detergent or a specially formulated blind cleaner, dip a soft cloth or sponge into the solution and ensure that you wring out excess water. Then wipe each slat with a soft cloth or sponge. Again, make sure that you pay attention to both sides of the slats, you don’t want the underside to be forgotten about! If there are any areas that are hard to clean, use a soft brush or toothbrush.

After you have cleaned all the slats (including both sides) wipe the slats with a clean, damp cloth to remove any residual soap or cleaner. Let the shutter blinds to air dry completely before reattaching or reinstalling them.

5. Lubrication

To maintain the smooth operation of your shutter blinds, it is important to lubricate the moving parts occasionally. You can use either a silicone-based spray lubricant or a specialised shutter blind lubricate. Apply a small amount to the hinges, tracks and any other moving components. Make sure that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Wipe away any excess lubricant to prevent attracting dust and dirt.

6. Regular Inspection

Include inspecting your shutter blinds into your weekly cleaning schedule. You want to make sure that you check for any signs of damage, such as broken slats, loose hinges or worn-out components. If you spot any issues, address them as soon as you can – ideally by a professional to maintain the integrity and functionality of your shutter blinds.
