How Blinds and Curtains Can Keep Your House Cool This Summer

We all know that weather in the UK is unpredictable. In the last few years we have had extreme weather, from 35 degrees in the summer to freezing temperatures in the winter! Although we all do love a hot summer, keeping your UK home cool can be a difficult task. Unless you are lucky enough to have air conditioning, we need all the tips and tricks we can get to make sure our homes stay cool. This blog is going to offer you some tips on how your blinds and curtains can help keep your house cool this summer.

Close Your Blinds!

This may seem like an obvious tip, but many people forget to do this simple step! Closing your blinds and curtains throughout the day means that you are blocking out the sun. The sun is at its hottest during the day, so closing the blinds and curtains during this time should help to block the direct sunlight. Opening the blinds and curtains in the evening, after sunset, will allow the cooler air to circulate.

Black out blinds and curtains are a great choice if you want to prevent sunlight from entering the room and keeping heat out. They also have the added advantage of keeping the heat in during the winter- saving you money on energy bills! Blackout blinds don’t just come in boring, dark colours anymore. They are available in a range of fabrics, patterns and colours.

Choose Wisely

All types of curtains and blinds are good at controlling the amount of light let into the room and the temperature, but some are better than others. Choosing the right curtains and blinds can help to keep your home cool in the summer. Here are some examples:

  • Shutters- These are popular in hot countries as they are excellent at keeping your home cool whilst allowing light to enter the room.
  • Venetian- Another great choice. This type of blind can open partially, allowing you to block the direct sunlight but still allowing fresh air to flow through. Vertical blinds are similar in this aspect.
  • Roman- Roman blinds give you the option of almost fully closing, allowing a gap at the bottom so the room still has some natural light entering. These are also available in black out.
  • Combine Curtains and Blinds

Not only is the combination of blinds and curtains now a popular trend, it also helps in keeping your home cool. The combination allows you to block out some of the direct sunlight and keep the room cooler without losing all the natural light. This is perfect for the summer, you don’t want your family and friends to be sitting in the dark!

    Open The Windows

As long as your curtains and blinds are shut, opening some of the windows in your home will not increase your home’s temperature. The blinds and curtains will block the direct sunlight but still allow a steady flow of fresh air to circulate. This will help to stop the room from feeling stuffy.
