5 Interior Design Tips and Tricks

Our homes are an ongoing design project, moving and shifting as our style and tastes change as we grow. While decorating and prettifying our houses is an ongoing process, there are some staple design tips and tricks that we can always rely on and use.

5 Interior Design Tips

  1. The Power of Three

Three really is the magic number, especially when it comes to interior design. In fact, all odd numbers are a designers dream. By grouping odds together, no matter what it is – cushions, candles, trinkets, plants, etc – it forces your eye to move around the displayed grouping and take it in. It also creates visual interest that even numbers and symmetry cannot compete with.

  1. The 70/30 Rule

If you’re struggling with balancing different styles in the same space, then you’ll want to stick to this rule. This is a great way to incorporate two different styles into a space without it looking chaotic and mismatched. By decorating 70% of the space in one style, and then the remaining 30% in a different style, you can create great contrast. So, if you’re torn between two styles, spice it up with the 70/30 rule and get the best of both worlds.

  1. Let there be LOTS of natural light!

Natural light has so, so many benefits, and there really is no substitute for it. Letting in the natural light benefits our health and wellbeing, but it can also influence how the different colours in our home appear to.

Before decorating a space, look at the light and how it is illuminated at different times of the day. South facing rooms benefit from more light, whereas north facing rooms can be darker. It’s always best to have a good grasp of the natural light in your home so that you can gauge which colours would suit it.

  1. Layer with tonal shades

If you want to make a room look inviting but also polished and put together, then you’ll need to use multiple shades of the same colour. With this handy trick, you can’t go wrong. It allows you to effortlessly add texture and pattern, whilst also adding artwork with the same colour.

  1. Wood Adds Warmth

Are you finding that a room in your house lacks warmth or character? Then add some wood into the space; this could be in the form of accessories, home decor, or furniture. Adding wood is a perfect way to lift a space and add texture. It can act as a great focal point or way to soften and warm a space.
