It can feel pretty wasteful to just throw them away, especially if they are still in good condition. Knowing how to recycle blinds can be confusing, with a lot of recycling centers having blinds on their do-not-recycle list. In simple terms, the type of blinds you have determine whether they can be recycled or not.
Here is a list of the most common blind types and how to recycle them.
Wood/Bamboo Blinds
Unfortunately these types of blinds can not be recycled because they have been treated. This means they are likely to contaminate the other items in the recycling bin. But why not upcycle them? Bamboo or wood blinds can be used as garden markers, picture frames or even donate them!
Plastic Vertical Blinds
Plastic blinds are either made from polyvinyl chloride or polyester, which means they can be recycled. Vinyl blinds are made from polyvinyl chloride which has to be treated so use a recycling locator to find the closest center that accepts vinyl. The same applies to blinds made from polyester.
Aluminium Blinds
Aluminium blinds are easily recycled, they don’t require any special process so disposing them in an environmentally friendly manner isn’t going to cause you any stress. Simply dismantle the blinds and take the aluminium and steel parts to your local recycling center. You could also choose to take them to a scrapyard!
